Santanu Das is one of those modern theatre practitioners who have been trying to find out a new theatrical language as much as possible. He has completed his graduation in Dramatics from Rabindra Bharati University (RBU), Kolkata and later obtained a Diploma in Dramatics from the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi. Presently he is working at Rabindra Bharati University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Drama. He started his career as a theatre director in 1990 with the play Atha Dar Pal Katha based on Tagore’s story. Next, he worked as Set Assistant in Ebar Ganeshar Pala and Eka evam Eka produced by Theatre Workshop, Kolkata. He has worked for various theatre groups in Delhi, namely Delhi Music Theatre, TAG, Act One, etc. He was also associated with Rang Vidushak, Bhopal. He also helped Bansi Kaul as a set designer in South Asian Music Festival, Adult Education Festival, Republic Day Festival, National Games, and Festival of India in Bhutan. He worked as designer with Devandra Raj Ankur, Shri Prassna, and Ashok Mukhopadahyay etc.
He worked as Director of Leo Tolstoy’s Power of Darkness’, Badal Sircar’s Evam Indrajit, Bertolt Brecht’s Aain, Satinath Bhaduri’s Dhorai Charit Manas, Jean Anouilh’s Romeo Jeannette, a Bangladeshi Ballad Malua Sundarir Pala, which is a Mymensingh gitika, and his own Asangati, Raisin in the Sun, Paglir Danga, Manu(sh)shi, Oedipus Turranus, Ghare Baire, and ‘Seturam’ produced by Kalyani Kalamandalam. Presently he has directed famous playwright Koushik Bhattcharyay’s ‘Gollachut’.
Recently he presented a paper on ‘Shakespeare in Bengal Theatre’ at Rhodes University, South Africa. His production participated in different State, Regional, National and International theatre festivals.
